A Campaign to Transform Bus Services in the South East
Fast Free Buses is a campaign working to make bus travel safer, cheaper, and accessible for everyone.
We exist to tackle transport inequality by removing cost barriers, improving safety and reliability, and showing how better bus services can transform lives, communities, and the environment. We champion free and affordable travel—especially for young people, older people, disabled people, and those on low incomes—so getting to school, work, healthcare, and community life is never out of reach.
By working with communities, gathering evidence, and running practical campaigns, we influence local councils and national government to invest in buses that are fast, fair, and fit for the future. Because when buses work for people, everything else works better too.
Our Mission
Our mission is to deliver a plan for a bus network that people can rely on — safe, affordable, and built around the needs of the communities it serves.
We are committed to reliable services that turn up on time, safe journeys that protect passengers and drivers, and meaningful community engagement that gives local voices real influence over public transport decisions.
We believe buses should be accessible to everyone, support education and employment, reduce isolation, and help tackle the cost of living. By investing in people, listening to frontline staff, and planning for the long term, we aim to create a network that works for today and tomorrow.
Through sustainable practices, fair funding, and public accountability, we will champion a bus service that strengthens communities, protects the environment, and restores trust in public transport.

Reliable Bus Services You Can Depend On
A reliable bus service is not a luxury — it’s a basic public service people build their lives around.
Buses must turn up on time, run when they’re meant to, and provide clear, honest information when things go wrong. Missed journeys mean missed work, missed education, missed healthcare and added stress for passengers who have no other option.
We believe reliability comes from proper planning, fair funding, and listening to drivers and passengers alike. That means realistic timetables, enough vehicles and staff, well-maintained buses, and routes designed around real demand — not profit margins.
Public transport should be dependable in all communities, not just where it’s easiest to run. Everyone deserves a service they can trust, every day, in every part of the region.
Reliable buses keep communities moving, support local economies, and give people confidence to leave the car at home. That’s the standard we’re committed to delivering.
Safety First on Our Bus Networks
Safety on public transport is non-negotiable. Passengers and drivers alike deserve to feel safe, respected, and protected every time they travel — especially children travelling to and from school.
That means well-trained, properly supported staff, buses that are regularly maintained, and clear procedures for dealing with antisocial behaviour, harassment, and emergencies. It also means making practical safety improvements where they matter most.
We support the introduction of seat belts on school buses as a basic, common-sense safety measure. Children should be properly protected while travelling, and parents should have confidence that school transport meets the highest safety standards.
Safety isn’t just about vehicles — it’s about people. Good lighting at stops, visible staff presence, working CCTV, and clear communication all help reduce risk and build trust. When incidents do happen, they must be taken seriously, acted on quickly, and followed up transparently.
Drivers’ safety is passenger safety. Listening to frontline staff, acting on their concerns, and giving them the tools to do their job properly makes the whole network safer for everyone.
A safer bus service encourages more people to use public transport, supports families, and ensures journeys are calm, accessible, and dignified for all.

Community Engagement and Local Voices
Strong public transport works best when it is shaped by the communities it serves.
We believe passengers, drivers, schools, businesses, and local residents should have a real voice in how bus services are planned and improved. Community engagement is not a box-ticking exercise — it is about listening, responding, and acting.
That means regular consultation on routes and timetables, clear and accessible ways for people to give feedback, and transparency about decisions that affect daily travel. When services change, communities deserve to know why and to be involved early.
Local knowledge matters. People who use buses every day understand what works and what doesn’t. By working with community groups, schools, disability organisations, and frontline staff, we can design services that reflect real needs.
Engaged communities build better transport. When people feel heard and respected, trust grows, services improve, and public transport becomes something communities are proud to support and use.
If you’d like, I can also create a short mission line, consultation pledge, or a “how to get involved” section to sit underneath this on the site.
Sustainable Transport for the Future
A sustainable bus network is essential for healthier communities, cleaner air, and a more resilient future.
Buses play a vital role in reducing congestion and cutting carbon emissions, but sustainability must be built into how services are planned and delivered. That means investing in cleaner vehicles, improving fuel efficiency, and supporting the transition to low- and zero-emission buses where possible.
Sustainability is also about making buses the easy choice. Reliable, affordable, and accessible services encourage people to leave the car at home, reducing traffic, noise, and pollution in our towns and neighbourhoods.
We believe environmental responsibility should go hand in hand with social responsibility. Sustainable transport must serve all communities fairly, including rural areas and those with fewer travel options.
By prioritising long-term investment, smart planning, and local accountability, we can create a bus network that meets today’s needs without compromising the future — for passengers, drivers, and the communities we serve.
